Exam Domains.

This exam is split up into 2. The first exam to take is the Essentials. The second one is Practical Application. You don't have to do them in that order, but that is the norm. The Essentials exam covers all the technical detail and involves a lot of learning by rote, whereas the Practical Application exam covers your ability to actually do stuff.

The exam is split up into 6 study and knowledge areas and each will test your conpetence in these areas to varying degrees. The 'Practical Application' exam does not cover Troubleshooting or Operational Procedures, however, knowledge of these areas is still provides essential underpinning information and techniques for the other domain areas. Otherwise the exams cover the same areas, but the percentages and types of questions are different. The 6 domain areas for each are listed below for the Essentials exam and the 4 for the Practical Application exam;

The Essentials Exam.

  • Domain 1.0 - Hardware - 27% Percent of the questions
  • Domain 2.0 - Troubleshooting, Repair & Maintenance - 20% Percent of the questions
  • Domain 3.0 - Operating System and Software - 20% Percent of the questions
  • Domain 4.0 - Networking - 15% Percent of the questions
  • Domain 5.0 - Security - 8% Percent of the questions
  • Domain 6.0 - Operational Procedure - 10% Percent of the questions

  • Domain 1.0 - Hardware - 38% Percent of the questions
  • Domain 2.0 - Operating Systems - 34% Percent of the questions
  • Domain 3.0 - Networking - 15% Percent of the questions
  • Domain 4.0 - Security - 13% Percent of the questions
